I am a storyteller. I like to use humor and suspense to put a “human face” on life’s struggles. The characters that I develop in my books live next door. There are the people struggling to forgive others and themselves. Then there are the power brokers that fear not being in control. The married man or woman that live in constant fear that their sexual secrets will be revealed. Racism and bigotry are portrayed by colorful characters. “I laughed and cried at the same time.” “I couldn’t put the book down.” These and other reviews of my writings have given me the greatest satisfaction.
As an Episcopal priest for the past fifty plus years I’ve served some of the largest congregations in our Church. It has been my privilege to have many notable citizens in my congregations. These have included former President and Mrs. George H. W. Bush and their families. Secretary of State James Baker. The infamous baby doctor Benjamin Spock. Secretary of Education Richard Riley and Supreme Court nominee Clement Haynsworth.
Dennis R. Maynard is the author of 22 books. Well over 250,000 Episcopalians have read his book, Those Episkopols. 3500 congregations around the United States use Those Episkopols in their new member ministries. Several denominational leaders have called it the unofficial handbook for the Episcopal Church. He is also the author of Forgive and Get Your Life Back. The same number of clergy have used that particular book to do forgiveness training in their congregations. The books in The Magnolia Series are growing in popularity around the nation as readers anxiously await each new chapter.”The novels give us a chance to look at the underside of parish life. While the story lines are fictional, the readers invariably think they recognize the characters. If not, they know someone just like the folks that attend First Episcopal Church in the town of Falls City, Georgia.” Over his forty-two years of parish ministry he has served some of the largest congregations in the Episcopal Church. His ministry included parishes in Illinois, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and California. President George H.W. Bush and his family were members of the congregation he served in Houston, Texas, also the largest parish in the Episcopal Church. He has served other notable leaders that represent the diversity of his ministry. These national leaders include Former Secretary of State, James Baker; Former Secretary of Education, Richard Riley; Supreme Court Nominee, Clement Haynsworth; and the infamous baby doctor, Benjamin Spock, among others.Doctor Maynard maintains an extensive speaking and travel schedule. He is frequently called on to speak, lead retreats, or serve as a consultant to parishes, schools and organizations throughout the United States. His most recent book, When Sheep Attack, is based on twenty-five case studies of clergy that were attacked by a small group of antagonists in their congregations. The antagonists successfully removed their senior pastor, leaving the congregations themselves divided and crippled. The book describes how it happened, what could have been done to stop it, and what can be done to prevent it from happening to your pastor and parish.

The Episcopal Church is known as the “thinking person’s religion” to those of us that love her. It is a Church solidly grounded in scripture, tradition, and reason. In this best selling book Doctor Maynard explains why it is also a Church that will not accept simplistic answers to complex questions. With humor and insight he answers some of the following questions and others frequently asked by inquirers. Why do Episcopalians read their prayers? Does God like all that ritual? Can you believe anything you want and be an Episcopalian? Why do Episcopalians reject Biblical Fundamentalism? The inquirer will finish the book with a better understanding of The Episcopal Church. Those that are already members will have the reasons they became Episcopalians warmly confirmed. The author gently reminds all readers that if you don’t feel good enough to go to any other church, The Episcopal Church welcomes you!

Do you love your parish? Are you fond of your pastor? Would you believe that in just a matter of a few weeks your pastor and his family could be abused, humiliated, and unemployed? In just a matter of days your parish could be split down the middle. A couple of months from now close to forty percent of the people you currently see at worship could no longer be there. Close to half of those will never again attend worship or participate in any church. Friends that you see talking and laughing this Sunday may never speak again. If you want to do whatever you can to keep that scenario from happening to your pastor and your parish, then this book is for you. It is the product of nearly a decade of work with parishes that are undergoing or have recently undergone the very scenario described above. The substance of this book is based on twenty-five case studies of clergy exercising faithful ministries with positive results that were attacked by a small group of antagonists in their congregations. The antagonists successfully “removed their senior pastor.” This book describes how it happened, what could have been to stop it, and what can be done to prevent it from happening to your pastor and parish. The Reverend Doctor Dennis R. Maynard is the author of ten books. He has served as a consultant to over one hundred parish and school boards in the United States and Canada.

“Forgive and forget” are words that can be too easily uttered . This book breaks those words into identifiable steps that will help the person distinguish between forgiving, reconciling, and restoring. We all know that we must forgive those who have hurt us. If we fail to do so, we end up being prisoners frozen in our own pain. But do we have to reconcile with them? Should we reconcile with them? Is it even advisable? Dr. Maynard gives us some guidelines for answering those questions for ourselves. Having reconciled do we restore them to the relationship? Do we restore the unfaithful spouse to the marriage bed? Do we give the employee that has stolen from us the new combination to the office safe? Once again, Doctor Maynard gives us the needed guidelines to make those critical decision for ourselves. He helps the reader understand that forgiveness is a process. He identifies and describes each of the steps in the forgiveness process in this book. As with all his writings, Doctor Maynard illustrates this book with inspirational stories and humor. The print copies of this book have made it a best seller among clergy and others in the helping professions. It has been used by thousands as a text book to conduct forgiveness workshops. While Doctor Maynard writes from a particular spiritual perspective, this is a self-help book that every reader struggling with forgiving those that have hurt them will find beneficial. When the Gospel of a young Episcopal priest conflicts with the secrets of sex, greed, and power in an old southern community, it can mean only one thing for the youthful outsider.
“The books in this series will teach, edify, and challenge people of faith. They are a treasured resource on just how the church community functions (or malfunctions). The series is popular with book clubs and discussion groups. From prejudice to sexuality, virtually every comfort zone is challenged. Trying to distinguish between the saints and the sinners could lead to some lively dialogue.” Mike Wourms, President, CSN Publishing
Falls City, Georgia is the type of community most folks would want to live in. It could easily be located anywhere in the United States. The people in the town work hard at preserving a certain way of life. Simmering just beneath the manicured lawns and behind the beautiful magnolia trees that sprawl across the village are the secrets of the people who live there. The ideals of the Gospel conflict with a life style devoted to protecting things best left in the shadows. Dennis Maynard weaves a tale in these novels that will leave the reader entertained, inspired, and challenged. You will experience laughter and an occasional tear as you follow the ministry of Father Steele Austin at Historic First Church.
“I was averaging one book a night – they are GOOD. You get started on them and can’t stop until you FINISH and then you want ANOTHER!” Donna Hughes, MIlledgeville, Georgia
